1 Corinthians 9
(1 Corinthians 9:19-22, ESV Bible)
Paul is not literally claiming that he lived without any obligation to the Torah. His words are similes wrapped in metaphors, crafted to make a specific point to a particular audience. When he says he became "like one without the law," he likely means that he didn’t insist on his right to separate himself from Gentile believers. Sharing a table with Gentiles was an act of self-restraint and humility.
Rather than viewing Paul as taking a casual or dismissive stance toward Torah observance, we should focus on the message he intended: live in a way that makes space for others. Be above reproach. Don’t insist on every right you believe you’re entitled to. Seek to understand others and meet them where they are. Show respect, compassion, and honor to your fellow members in the community of faith.
